Villajoyosa – one of the few genuine Spanish towns along the coastline of Costa Blanca. With the colourful facades it is different to the other towns and you will never forget it. If you stroll in the old village you will experience something very special – the small and narrow streets, the colourful houses, no traffic, Spanish children playing, old women sitting watching them from the shadow and no shops. If you walk there at night you might even be lucky to see the gypsies singing and dancing in the street.
THE OLD TOWN
All this only a stone’s throw from everything you need for an unforgetable holiday: Restaurants, shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, medical centre and of course the beach. Villajoyosa has managed to keep most of the influence from all the tourists away. Of course there are tourists but they must visit La Vila, as the local say, in accordance with the conditions of the Spanish population. This is not very hard the locals being so kind and friendly.
The old village is situated in the very centre of Villajoyosa. As mentioned, “everything” is close. The old village ends at the long and beautiful beach. Here you find several small, charming cafés where you can have refreshment or a meal at a reasonable price while you enjoy life of the street. Most of the restaurants are stubbornly and wonderfully Spanish.
THE BEACH AND THE SEA
After your meal you can have your siesta at the beach on the other side of the esplanade, which by the way is approved of the EU. It is nice and clean. If you want, you can rent a parasol and a sun chair or you can just find a place for your towel by your own. The beach is spacious; there is no feeling of being packed like sardines here.
If you are more the adventuring type you can enjoy the diving club further on at the beach, you can do mountain climbing in the mountains close to the city, there are great areas for biking or you can just hike in the mountains. If you play golf, there are several known golf courses in the neighbourhood.
THE NATURE
La Vila offers you other interesting activities such as a visit to the famous chocolate factory, the Valor, which has a big shop and cafeteria on the main street. Not many people know that in the 17th and 18th centuries La Vila was the most famous town in Europe for chocolate manufacture, importing large quantities of cacao from Ecuador and Venezuela. You can visit the Chocolate Museum and see the history for yourself.
A visit to the port and the fishing market is interesting. In the afternoon the fishing boats come back from their day at sea followed by the seagulls. 50 fishing boats have their “home” in Villajoyosa port and when they are all there the capture of the day is sold at an auction. Here all the big shops and restaurants in the area come to get fresh fish for today’s customers. In the port you can see boats being built in the yards and they are still making trawlers of wood by traditional methods, which is a sight you seldom see today. The shipyard is close to yacht harbor where the one interested can look at wonderful boats from the restaurant or cafeteria at the yacht club.
THE HARBOUR AND FISHING
THE DAILY MARKET
Villajoyosa is also known as the "gourmet" city and one week every year we celebrate this with most restaurants offering a special menu. One evening there is a wine tasting event in the daily market. A visit to the daily market is an adventure with all the fresh food being offered and the nice market bar where they can prepare food that you have bought in the market.
In the Municipal Museum you can have a look at all the findings from the excavations all the way back from the Bronze Age up to Roman and Muslim culture. The hilltop on which the old town centre stands was a settlement founded at the beginning of the Iberian age around the 6th century BC. The walls of the old town standing today, dating from the 16th century, are fine examples of early Renaissance military architecture. The name Vila Joiosa appears in the 13th century and means joyful city or jewel city.
THE FIESTA
Villajoyosa celebrates each year with a nationaly acknowledged fiesta (24.7-31.7) its liberation, year 1536, from the arabic (moorish) occupation of the area. This fiesta is worth the trip to the town by itself.
The Villajoyosa fiesta is a fantastic event and it is known world wide. It is one of the fes of the many festivals in Spain that has its national status. It starts with the parades during two evenings. Through out the week the "Desembarco" when the boats are coming from the sea in the dawn is a spectacular happening. So is the fireworks at the end of the week.
Almost everyone in town is taking part of the fiesta and all the "companias" in the parades have their "peña" where the meet, celebrate, have fun, eat and drink. If you are lucky you get invited to this. Do you want a nice and quiet week in Villajoyosa you should avoid the fiesta week that always starts the 25th of July. But it is always better to join the party!
